Why Perfect Order Might Be More Important Than People Think
KAMEX TEAMPerfect Order introduced more to the Pokémon TCG than most collectors realize.
It's not the loudest set of the year. It didn't sell out overnight or produce a chase card that dominated every conversation. But when you look past the launch hype, Perfect Order quietly did something most expansions don't...it started a new era, expanded a beloved mechanic, and introduced cards that competitive players are already building around.
Here's why this set deserves a second look:
POPULAR DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN BETTER
One of the biggest mistakes collectors make is assuming that the most talked-about set is automatically the best one. In reality, many sets are driven by short-term hype. A popular Pokémon, a difficult pull rate, or a few expensive cards can create excitement very quickly. Perfect Order took a different approach.
Instead of relying on a single headline chase card, the set introduced new mechanics, competitive cards, and the beginning of a new era tied to Pokémon Legends: Z-A. That makes it historically significant even if it wasn't the loudest release of the year.
THE BEGINNING OF Z-A
One fact many collectors overlook is that Perfect Order is the first major Pokémon TCG expansion built around Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Lumiose City.
Historically, the first sets connected to important Pokémon games often become reference points for that generation. Years from now, collectors looking back at the Legends: Z-A era will likely see Perfect Order as where it all started. That doesn't automatically make it valuable, but it does give the set an identity that many expansions never develop.
MEGA EVOLUTION IS BACK
Another reason Perfect Order stands out is its focus on Mega Evolution. The set features Mega Zygarde ex as its centerpiece alongside Mega Starmie ex, Mega Clefable ex, and Mega Skarmory ex. Rather than simply adding another powerful Pokémon ex, the set continues building the Mega Evolution era that many longtime collectors already have nostalgia for.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CARDS ISN'T MEGA ZYGARDE
Ironically, the card generating some of the most discussion isn't Mega Zygarde ex.
It's Meowth ex. Meowth ex allows players to search for a Supporter card when it enters play and can repeatedly reuse that effect. Competitive players immediately recognized how useful that could be because it fits into many different deck strategies instead of supporting only one archetype. When a card becomes useful across multiple decks, it often keeps a set relevant long after release.
NEW MECHANICS
This is probably the most overlooked part of the set.
Perfect Order introduced a new approach to Special Energy cards. Instead of providing benefits to every Pokémon equally, some of these Energy cards are designed to support specific Pokémon types. For example, Growing Energy benefits Grass Pokémon while Rocky Energy provides protection for Fighting Pokémon. This creates new deck-building options and opens design space for future expansions. Many collectors focus only on artwork and chase cards, but new mechanics are often what make a set important in hindsight.
SMALL SET, BIG IMPACT
Perfect Order contains just 88 cards in its main set, making it one of the smallest modern Pokémon expansions. At first, that may sound like a weakness. In reality, smaller sets often have less filler and a more concentrated focus. Nearly every major card in the set serves a purpose, whether for collecting, competitive play, or expanding Mega Evolution.
Sometimes a smaller set can leave a larger impact than a much bigger one.
THE MARKET MISSING A POINT
The conversation around Perfect Order has mostly focused on whether it is exciting enough compared to other releases. But that might be the wrong question. A more interesting question is whether the set introduced something meaningful. When you look at the facts, Perfect Order:
Introduced the Pokémon Legends: Z-A era to the TCG.
Expanded Mega Evolution with multiple new Mega Pokémon ex.
Added new type-focused Special Energy cards.
Introduced Meowth ex, one of the most talked-about competitive cards in the set.
Delivered all of this in one of the smallest modern Pokémon expansions.
That's a much stronger foundation than many people realize.
THE FUTURE?
Nobody knows. But judging it solely on launch hype misses what makes the set interesting. Some expansions are remembered because everyone wanted them immediately. Others are remembered because they introduced important ideas, mechanics, or moments in Pokémon history. Perfect Order may end up being the second type. And sometimes those are the sets collectors wish they paid more attention to from the beginning.
